On Spammers and Other Pointless Crap

Postby Bugbyte » Mon Mar 30, 2009 10:27 am

Hey All,

I've noticed the sudden influx of spammers and I'm working on ways to keep them out, but in the meantime here's what I'd like you to do.

Please DO NOT reply to topics they make. They aren't actual people, just programs that go around posting to forums, and when they see replies they know it's an active board and come back. So, don't feed the spammers.

If you want to let me know something's up, reply to this topic so I get a notification in my email, or just email me and let me know about it. I will take care of it.

Thanks!

Hey, so I remembered all of sudden about this thing my friend showed me. It's this spambot-catcher thing that you can just embed somewhere.

I'm sorry for being so vague, but all I remember is that you can find it online. It looks like a small box that goes on the corner of the webpage. It's purple and orange and says Spam Poison on it. Any bots that enter your page get mixed up, confused, and basically trapped. Basically they teach the spambots to stay away, if they're ever able to de-freeze their programming.

Well, that's all I know about it, if I find the link for it I'll tell you.

Hey Katie, thanks for the note! I actually already have SpamPoison embedded at the bottom of the page here, as well as on the main comic site, to keep the bots from catching my users' addresses. The bots that post to the forum here are another story, they work a lot differently and they can be pretty hard to keep from flooding the forum. I have them under control for now, but they're very sneaky sometimes.

Thanks for the heads up, and welcome to the forums!
